In the vibrant communities of Siaya County, something extraordinary is happening on the sports fields. The Chanua Msichana initiative by MYSD is transforming how young women learn about reproductive and maternal healthcareโnot in classrooms, but through the power of sports. This innovative program proves that when you combine football, netball, and athletics with essential health education, you create magic that changes lives.
“When young women feel safe, supported, and empowered through sports, they open their hearts to knowledge that transforms their futures. Health education delivered through play creates lasting impact.”
For years, young women in rural Kenya have faced barriers to accessing accurate reproductive health information. Cultural sensitivities, limited youth-friendly services, and traditional educational approaches often fall short. But the Chanua Msichana initiative discovered a powerful truth: the football field is one of the safest spaces for difficult conversations. When young women gather for sports, they’re not just developing athletic skillsโthey’re building trust, confidence, and the foundation for critical health discussions that could save their lives..

Through carefully designed sessions, our trained peer educators integrate reproductive and maternal health topics into sports activities. Between practice drills and friendly matches, young women learn about menstrual health, family planning, antenatal care, HIV prevention, and their reproductive rights. The results speak for themselves: participants show increased health knowledge, higher uptake of youth-friendly services, and the confidence to make informed decisions about their bodies and futures. These young women become health champions, sharing knowledge with their peers and transforming entire communities..
