In Nairobi’s informal settlements, young people face barriers that extend far beyond the sports field—limited education access, few exposure opportunities, and restricted pathways to success. Since 2007, Mtaani Youth Sports Development (MYSD) has recognized a fundamental truth: transforming lives requires more than just sports training. It demands a holistic approach that combines athletics with education support, cultural exchange, leadership development, and real opportunities for youth to break cycles of poverty and claim their potential..
“A football can open doors to classrooms. A tournament can become a bridge to the world. When we invest in youth holistically—their minds, their character, their networks—we don’t just change individuals. We transform entire communities.”.
Too often, talented youth from informal settlements excel on the field but drop out of school due to fees, never travel beyond their neighborhood, and lack mentors who believe in their potential. MYSD’s comprehensive youth development model addresses these interconnected challenges through integrated programs: educational scholarships that ensure promising athletes stay in school, cultural exchange programs that connect Nairobi youth with peers across Kenya and internationally, mentorship initiatives that pair young people with role models, and leadership training that builds skills for life beyond sports. This isn’t charity—it’s a strategic investment in Kenya’s future leaders, entrepreneurs, and changemakers who happen to come from Kaloleni, Huruma, Mathare, and Kibera.

Through educational scholarships, MYSD has supported over 200 youth to continue their studies while pursuing sports excellence, with beneficiaries now attending universities, technical colleges, and vocational programs. Cultural exchange programs have exposed participants to diverse communities across Kenya and connected them with international youth through sports tournaments and virtual exchanges, broadening horizons and building networks that last a lifetime. The democratic leadership training introduced at forums like Makina Mosque equips youth with governance skills and civic knowledge, while mentorship programs connect participants with professionals who guide their career development. Sports Governance Academies integrate life skills education with athletic training, ensuring every practice session builds both physical and personal capacity..
