In Nairobi’s informal settlements, where over half the city’s population resides, young people face overwhelming challenges—limited space, few recreational facilities, high unemployment, and exposure to drugs, crime, and gangs. Since 2007, Mtaani Youth Sports Development (MYSD) has been working at the grassroots level to address these challenges through comprehensive youth programs that combine sports, education, and community development. Our approach recognizes that sustainable change happens when we invest in young people and give them the tools, skills, and support they need to transform their own lives and communities.
Our sports and performing arts programs create safe spaces where children and youth can develop their talents in football, athletics, music, and dance. These aren’t just recreational activities—they’re structured programs that provide discipline, routine, and positive role models in environments where such stability is often lacking. By bringing professional coaching and quality equipment to communities that would otherwise never access such resources, we level the playing field and show young people that their zip code doesn’t determine their potential. With over 5,000 youth trained and regular programs across multiple settlements, we’ve created a network of safe havens where young people know they belong.
Education is central to breaking the cycle of poverty, which is why MYSD runs aggressive stay-in-school programs and provides scholarships for children who would otherwise drop out due to financial constraints. We’ve supported over 100 students with full and partial scholarships, but our impact on education goes deeper—the discipline and time management learned through sports translates into better school attendance and performance. We work closely with families to address barriers to education, understanding that keeping a child in school often requires supporting the entire household. Our mentorship programs connect youth with positive role models who guide them through academic challenges and help them envision futures beyond their current circumstances..

Recognizing that healthy communities require informed youth, MYSD integrates critical health and social education into our programs. We conduct family planning sessions, drug and alcohol awareness workshops, and programs addressing crime prevention and gang resistance. Rather than lecturing, we create dialogue spaces where young people can discuss real issues they face, learn from peers who’ve overcome similar challenges, and access information that empowers them to make healthy choices. Our community health initiatives have reached hundreds of thousands of people, creating ripples of awareness that extend from program participants to their families and neighbors..
our Impact
The true measure of MYSD’s impact isn’t just in numbers—it’s in the transformed lives, strengthened families, and revitalized communities we see every day. Youth who once had no direction now mentor others. Parents who worried about their children’s futures now watch them compete in tournaments and graduate from school. Communities that were fragmented by challenges now unite to celebrate their young athletes and artists. By investing in informal settlement youth through sports, education, and mentorship, MYSD is proving that every young person—regardless of where they live—deserves the opportunity to discover their potential and build a brighter future. In this concluding paragraph, summarize the key takeaways from your article, reinforcing the most important ideas discussed.
