In the bustling informal settlements of Nairobi, where space is limited and opportunities can seem even more scarce, something remarkable is happening. For nearly two decades, Mtaani Youth Sports Development (MYSD) has been using the power of sports to transform the lives of thousands of young people, creating ripples of positive change that extend far beyond the football pitch.

The Power of Sports in Underserved Communities

Since our founding in 2007, we’ve witnessed firsthand how sports can be a catalyst for change. In areas where youth face daily challenges including poverty, limited educational opportunities, and exposure to drugs and crime, organized sports programs provide more than just physical activity—they offer structure, purpose, and hope.

Through our comprehensive sports programs, we’ve reached over 1,000,000 people across Nairobi’s communities, with more than 5,000 young people directly benefiting from our training in sports and performing arts. These aren’t just numbers—they represent lives changed, potential unlocked, and futures rewritten.

One of the most significant impacts of our work has been the creation of safe spaces where children and youth can thrive. In neighborhoods where opportunities for constructive engagement are limited, our sports programs offer young people aged 6 to 25 a positive alternative to the streets.

Our training sessions, held regularly across multiple communities, have become anchors in these neighborhoods. They’re places where young people know they’re welcome, where they can develop their talents, and where they’re surrounded by mentors who believe in their potential. The impact of having consistent, safe, and supportive environments cannot be overstated in communities where such spaces are rare.

While athletic development is at the core of what we do, the impact of MYSD extends far beyond sports skills. Through our programs, young athletes learn discipline, teamwork, time management, and leadership—skills that translate directly into success in school and later in their careers.

Our approach integrates mentorship with sports training, ensuring that as young people develop their athletic abilities, they’re also growing as individuals and future leaders. We’ve seen countless youth who started as shy participants transform into confident young leaders who now mentor newer members of our programs..

Community-Wide Transformation

The impact of our work radiates beyond the individual participants to entire families and communities. Parents report reduced stress knowing their children are engaged in productive activities. Communities experience decreased youth involvement in crime and antisocial behavior. Local leaders increasingly recognize sports programs as essential community infrastructure.
Our events and tournaments bring communities together, creating moments of joy, pride, and unity in areas often defined by their challenges. When families gather to watch their youth compete, when neighbors cheer together, when communities celebrate their young athletes, it strengthens social bonds and builds collective hope for the future.

Our work has earned recognition beyond Kenya’s borders, including our membership in the World Federation Against Drugs (WFAD). This international recognition validates our approach and connects us to a global network committed to using positive engagement to protect youth from harmful influences.
This recognition also opens new opportunities for partnerships, knowledge sharing, and resource mobilization—all of which ultimately benefit the young people we serve.
The transformation happening through MYSD is proof that with the right support, young people from any background can achieve remarkable things. Whether through sports equipment donations, volunteer coaching, scholarship sponsorship, or financial support, there are many ways to be part of this inspiring work.

Every young athlete we support carries the potential to inspire others. Every community we reach becomes stronger. Every life changed creates ripples that extend far into the future.

The young athletes of Nairobi aren’t just playing sports—they’re rewriting their stories, defying expectations, and building a better future for themselves and their communities. And at Mtaani Youth Sports Development, we’re honored to be part of their journey.
